Speaker cables are an important asset to any sound system, and are probably more important than you may have thought. Your speakers can only play high quality sound, if they are receiving a high quality signal. Poor speaker cables usually cause sound to degrade, so even if you have really expensive speakers, you’ll be disappointed in sound quality. Your speakers are only as good as your conductors, so finding the right ones should be absolutely key. Contrary to popular belief, you actually don’t have to spend that much money in order to purchase quality speakers.
The type of speaker cables that you purchase will probably be dictated by your budget, but there will be plenty of options available no matter which type you finally settle on. The most common materials used as signal conductors are copper, aluminum, silver and gold. Gold is by far the best material to be used in any speaker cables, and will provide the most clean and crisp sound. However, as you might have guessed, gold is also extremely expensive. However, it may be worth an investment. Gold cables will last longer, and sound better than any other type available.
Copper is the most common material that’s used in speaker cables. But the problem with copper is that it is commonly mistreated, and can oxidize fairly easily. Not purchasing high quality copper can lead to scratchy or impure sound, and that will have you disappointed. Aluminum is better, but usually more expensive. But you’re less likely to have the same problems with aluminum as your conductor. Silver is second only to gold, and as a speaker cable wire it is fantastic. However silver is also prone to oxidization over time, which means the cables will need to be replaced eventually.
Make sure to check your stereo’s manual to find the exact specifications on size, and suggestions for the best type of cables. You’ll have to make sure to purchase the correct type, so that you find speaker cables that will successfully attach and send signals to your speakers. Otherwise you could end up shelling out money for wires that aren’t compatible with your system. Also work out a budget before you go to the store to see how much you want to spend. Cables can cost as little as $10 but can also go much, much higher than that. Be prepared to spend a decent amount, as this is an investment into the long term sound quality of your stereo and speakers.
When you’re actually looking to purchase speaker cables, you can use a local electronics store, or music store. Both should have a few options of each wire type, and all will have varying costs. Ask for suggestions, and even to test out that type of wire on a store speaker model. That way you can ensure you find speaker cables that you’ll be really happy with, on your budget. Buying online is not recommended, unless you know exactly what you want. This is because you won’t have the ability to test the cables first, and may end up unhappy with the type that you purchase.
